My computer recently started crashing when idling. If I allowed the screen saver come on, it would never wake back up. Sometimes it would freeze even if left alone for less than a minute.

The freezing would consist of nothing moving. Not even the mouse.

I fixed the problem by not allowing the CPU to run less than 50% (in power save options).

However, Firefox 2 wouldn't boot. I installed Firefox 3 and it wouldn't boot. I uninstalled and reinstalled, still nothing. I would get the "Send Error Report" screen. Firefox would never even try to run. I would click the button and 2 seconds later, it would crash.

I also installed Google SketchUp and it does the same thing.

Those two are the only ones showing problems, but I don't run many programs. Firefox, Office Suite. All my engineering programs are on my XP computer.

Virus scans show nothing.

I recently took my computer to Best Buy (warranty) and they said my HD is bad. They replaced my hard drive, but lost my reformatting discs. They used generic XP discs, and I reformatted using my Vista upgrade. After the installation was complete the computer would crash as soon as the welcome screen would appear.

I put my old HD back in and it has been running fine except for the problems above.

Sounds Soooooo typical of the big box stores.thats why I by direct from HP. They always seem to come through. I recently had a problem and their tech support fixed one problem but the second error their tech made a mess out of things. I went directly to Microsoft and had it fixed in under 30 minutes. I then received an e-mail from HP Tech Supervisor and talked to them. To keep me happy they gave me a full after warranty expires warranty. Bottom line! Buy from the manufacture
