Hi,
I've been facing this difficulty for quite some time and have tried all kinds of remedies - some of them suggested on this forum, without success.

My HP Pavilion zt1135 laptop running XP Home edition 5.1 switches off every time I run a Spybot or NAV 2002 scan. Very rarely, even when there is no scan, the laptop switches off. I have never been able to run a complete system scan due to this problem. I have tried re-installing NAV, have scanned the registry for known trojans and used Symantec scanners for sobig, msblast etc without success.

Am now at my wits' end. The HijanThis log is given below. Somebody, pls help !

I have a clue ... but can you tell me if it shuts off right when the scan starts or a little after. I think it's a heating problem ... thermal sensors on intel switch off if temperature is too high .. now what would carry laptop temp up, a scan of course ... increased processor usage i have an evo n 1000v and it always goes up about 7 degress during scan. Download motherboard monitor and test it .. or for a quick test get aida32 and go to the Computer > sensor section it should detect your thermal sensors and give you the temp ... search www.google.com for software don't have exact link now.

Good guess, Hylian.

However, these last couple of days, the laptop has started switching off on cold starts, within a couple of minutes of booting. In fact, I could send out this response only after a couple of attempts.

I did try out Aida32 (www.aida32.hu) but it does not give me any information when I try Computer>>sensor. Either it does not support HP Pavilion or my motherboard sensors are not functional. Are there any other similar tools which I can try out ?

Btw, I've installed all the latest security patches from Microsoft and my NAV 2002 has the latest updates. Incidentially, my NAV 2002 Auto-Protect is enabled but it remains disabled for the first 5 minutes after booting. Is this significant ?

Well if i were you i'd get it into the manufacturer and let them have a look at it. It could be a lot of different problems ranging from power supply , processor , graphics cards .. .you really need to run proper diagnostics on it ... you could well be screwing it up on every boot. If there is no known problem and fix of this sort on the specific laptop then take it into manufacturer ...
