Subject: howiper.exe and DNS Trouble
OS: XP Professional Japanese
CPU/Ram: Intel Pentium
Model/Manufacturer: ThinkPad X40
Comment:

Norton Anti Virus 2005 detected howiper.exe on my PC. This file has been quarantined by NAV but I still have two troubles.

1. O17 entry of HighjackThis keeps appearing upon restarting the Windows.
2. DNS (?) trouble. When the Windows is restarted, I cannot access the Internet. I have to reset Internet-related properties by IBM Access Connections.

I looked the logs of this site and found some instructions.
http://www.computing.net/security/wwwboard/forum/17399.html

I used fixwareout but the problem persists.

I appreciate if somebody could look into the logs and help me clean my PC!

Run fixwareout again. make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt)

Please post you HT log.

Download Ewido Security Suite then set it up this way Ewido Setup Instructions We will need this later in safe mode

Please download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link

No prompts to reboot my computer are returned. The Fixit program returns report.txt without any dialogue.

The 017 listed in you HT log is most likely your internet provider, if you remove it you will lose your internet connection. The bad 017 usually looks like this one:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{6298E335-386B-4C86-B6FC-7107B906C17D}: NameServer = 85.255.115.100,85.255.112.100

Your log looks clean. Delete the quarantined files in Norton's, delete the item in the recycle bin.

Thanks. After I stopped fixing the O17 entry, the connection problem has never occurred.
