how to rid of a bot

Specs: Windows Vista Home Premium, Intel Core Duo / 3GB
Something is running this machine both when it sits idle and when I am trying to get its attention. The "busy" light is constantly flickering and I can hear the disk drive thrashing. (My typing this for example, got well ahead of the words appearing on the screen). I am surprised that Googling the above phrase (how to get rid of a bot) produced so little. Are there no products out there that can find what I am guessing is a bot parasite? (A full scan using Microsoft's Security Essentials turned up nothing).

How long have you had this problem? A lot of the time this sort of malware will infest when you go to a website/download something. I would suggest the following if possible:

1.) a system restore to a time before it was installed if possible
2.) download and run malwarebytes

if malwarebytes ends up with a log, let me know what it found so that we can make sure the bot is gone. I recommend against using cc's or personal information untill this is resolved.

Thanks for the counsel. I should have dealt with this sooner. The consequence is that the problem pre-dates the oldest available re-set. But I'll download and run Malwarebytes and report back.

I mostly suggested malwarebytes because it is easy to get a hold of, they take care of many of the basic mean programs. There is still a chance that you have something quite nasty, with luck it will at least recognise a bad process and lead towards a fix

I ran a full scan with Malwarebytes and it came up with zero -- nothing but repeated "No malicious items detected" statements. I ran only the free version; might the paid version be more thorough still, go deeper in some way?

After "sleeping" all night the machine is entirely mine, but (fuzzy understanding that I have) I think that it's just a matter of time before the botnet finds that the machine is awake. When it returns later, think I'll disconnect my Internet connection for a time as a way to "prove" this intruder, not that that will cure anything..
