Hi all.

My Norton AntiVirus 2003 Pro found this virus, W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen (it's a worm), in my computer. I've done every method Symantec suggested (removal tool, manuall removal...) and updated evrything there was to update, but still the virus hasn't been found, even after a full system scan and a scan in safe mode.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Is it in your System restore folder? Anti-virus programs cannot access System restore.

Try this:-

Windows XP

1. Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check Turn off System Restore.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.
7. Repeat steps 1 through 6, except in step 4, uncheck Turn Off System Restore.

Then after you do this, please create a new restore point:

Got to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. On the next page that comes up you will have three choices, choose Create Restore Point. Then click next type in a description "after cleanup" or something like that. Then choose "Create" then close.

Hope this may be of some help.

Nemets,

I have to admit, you have me confused.

You've done eveything to remove it,(it's gone) and now you can't find it. This is the/a problem?

CrazyOne, Norton said that i have that virus but it couldn't remove it - therefor i need to remove it somehow by myself, and in all the scans i've made the virus hasn't been found - but i do know that i'm still ifected.

Nemets,

First, "but i do know that i'm still ifected." May I ask, how you know this.

Second, where were the files. In your restore maybe. This, "Norton said that i have that virus but it couldn't remove it" is what you would of been told, if so. You said, that you disabled the restore (rollback) That would of purged (deleted) them. This brings me back, to how do you know, you're still infected.

CrazyOne, first, I checked the report of Norton and it said what is the virus and what is it (worm btw). The virus is in the "c:\windows\system32" and it looks like a normal windows help file that called "winhlpp32.exe". I got to this folder and deleted this file but after few seconds it just reapears(!). so i'm pretty sure I'm still infected with it, and still looking ways to remove it.

Nemets.
