Anyone tell me how to permanently get rid of the QTTASK.exe that has somehow got on my machine?
I've removed it from the start-up menu (msconfig) 6 times, and the freakin thing just comes back when I reboot. it's driving me nuts. I'm not literate enough to go into the registry ... any other solutions? ... before I take a hammer to it? ;-) lol

in msconfig/start-up it's..
"C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.exe"-atboottime

This file is used by Quicktime. It is used by Quicktime in order to check for updates at the Quicktime.com site. In order to remove it from the system tray, perform the following steps:

1. Open Quicktime.
2. Select Edit > Preferences > QuickTime
Preferences.
3. The QuickTime settings box will open.
Select "Update Check" from the dropdown
menu.
4. On the bottom of the screen, you will
notice a checkbox for "Check for
updates Automatically", uncheck it and
close out Quicktime.

The QTTask.exe file will no longer start up.

Good luck.

Hession, I followed your instructions; all the preferences are; General;
Connection speed;
Streaming transport;
Streaming proxy;
Registration.

There isn't an *update check* .... HELP, it's back on my tray! *screams in frustration, and doesn't ever wanna see quicktime again!*

This is what I did to cure mine from running:

I made a text file in NotePad with just the word "dummy" in it. I renamed this to qttask.exe and copied it to replace the proper one in c:\windows\system

I then unticked it in msconfig. The entry will remain but the file will obviously be totally inactive. It will also stay unticked in msconfig.

To finish the job run sfc and when it says that the file is corrupted just tell it to update it in the verification table (this bit is just a nicety).

I'm on W98SE. I don't see why it should make any difference but if you want to save the original (proper) qttask.exe somewhere just to play safe then be my guest.

Derek

Hi MS,

I was using QT 6 (registered) and I suspect you are using QT5. Sorry about the confusion. Let us know how you make out as Derek's advice should also work.
