Ok, the problem is not as stupid as the subj line may lead to believe. I have eTrust EZ av installed with the latest definitions. I have the XP built-in firewall set along with a My Firewall Plus, which I have set to block any in/outgoing traffic from any programs that are not essential. I scan my computer weekly for viruses and I don't execute any programs emailed to me.
Somehow, I get virus alerts several (up to every 15 mins) times a day (just got one again), mostly W32.Lioten.AA, also Lovgate.F and IRC.Flood.. After I scan the infected folder (usually win/system32),it'll be peaceful for half an hour, and then I'll get a virus alert again. I have also scanned my PC in safe mode, but nothing has changed
Following are my assumptions: since I have firewalled my PC up, blocking everything I feel might not be vital, I suspect the virus is already in my PC in a form that is unrecognizable to the av. There might be a program (or the virus itself) that keeps writing it down after it has been cleaned. So, here's my problem - What the heck?? How come the av can't clean my pc appropriately, and more importantly, how can I get rid of these viruses?

Just to be clear, were you infected before you installed the firewall/antivirus? Are these warnings, or is ETrust cleaning/quarantining the virus packets? Have you turned off "system restore"(My Computer>Properties>System Restore) and then restarted your computer? Have you emptied your temp internet files and off line content? Have you installed all the "critical updates" using Windows Update? Have you checked your security settings by using the performance and other virus/spyware scans at PC Pitstop? Do you have Adaware/Spybot installed(available from http://wilders.org/)? Since you are using ETrust's version of Zone Alarm, there is no need to enable the XP firewall, so I suggest you disable it.
