I have been dissatified with the performance of Windows Defender 8.1 and want to replace it with the free version of Avast. I have read that Windows Defender 8.1 is a part of Windows 8.1 and therefore can not be deleted. I have been told that I can not run two AV programs at the same time; can WD 8.1 be disabled so I can use Avast?

Thank you.

I don't believe that Windows Defender can be removed but it can be disabled. Normally a third party AV product such as Avast would do this during the install process.
