My daughter was sent an e-mail with an attachment infected with hybris worm. She is using Norton 2001 on a Win98 laptop. Norton caught and quarantined the exe file, but no reference was made to who sent the e-mail. Where is the e-mail now? Norton shows the file in quarantine, but no info on the email. Does anyone know how to find out the sender? (I'm a Linux user myself, so don't have this particular problem. *smug smile* But I'd like to help my daughter figure this out. Any help appreciated, indeed.

An antivirus program would not know anything about an email message itself--it only scans attachments. Is that email still sitting in your daughter's inbox? You need to track the sender by looking at the headers of that email message, unless your daughter has already deleted it (in which case, you'll never find out).

You dont need to track the sender. It just cost u some energy. The sender can be even ur daughter's friends but of course at most, they dont know too, because a virus can replicate itself and seek the addresses in the addressbook and then send it everyone.

The email itself may be quanrantined if it contain vbs script that call the attachment.

If you have time to waste... ask your isp for smtp logs... but i suggest to simply refuse email with attachment!

A virus doesn't need an attachment in order to infect your PC.

Has your daughter got Flash 3 or 4 installed on her PC some programes such as Flash have Hybris Virus in it, but the hybris Virus is harmless, or any other prgrames that she has downloaded from the web, If so simple Enable the java & active filter in your anti virus software

You can identify public ip address of sender by checking through router..once u know the ip, u can catch telephone no and sender's address.
Some viruses in outlook express like w32/frethem.k will pick up email addresses automatically,
