How does anti-Trojan software work?

What I mean is, does it catch the stuff coming in, or after it arrives and starts mucking about, or do you have to scan to catch the trojans?

I only use spybot S&D, after you scan, fix and immunize the spy and adware are gone. It's kept my PC running great!
If you need a simple solution, try mine. I try to give advise on things that have happened to my PC. Glad to have a chance to help you.

doghead, it depends on which Trojan scanner you use. Trojan Hunter ($49) works all the time in the background catching stuff as it comes in. http://www.trojanhunter.com/
SwatIt only works when you start the scan but it is free..... http://swatit.org/
There are probably loads of others out there.

SwatIt isn't that good either - recently let me down twice but Bazooka! http://www.bykeyword.com/downloads/software-12/download-12666.html (another one which scans (very quickly) afterwards) found everything.
