How do I get rid of Adobe Reader Update?

February 10, 2011 at 12:19:36
Specs: Windows XP
Hello,

Please Help: I turned on my computer this morning and noticed I had a weird icon in the bottom right hand corner of my screen telling me to install updates for Adobe Reader? I think this is a virus. I went to my add/remove programs and uninstalled it, but the icon is still there? How do I get rid of it? Any advise would be great! Thanks much

False Alarm. You should have just allowed the update, but I understand how on guard we are these days. Adobe is a reputable company. You use adobe flash all the time while surfing the web. Adobe reader allows you to view many files on the internet and in general that use the .pdf format. This is a common format and valuable program to have. Most manuals for digital cameras etc are in .pdf format so you really should have it installed. I suggest you go to adobe.com and redownload adobe reader, it is definitely trustworthy and not a virus of any kind.

Did you try rebooting?

If it's got stuck then one way would be to download and install Adobe Reader again, then reboot. You can then either leave it in place or uninstall it.

We all live on the same ball.

If you uninstalled adobe and the notification is still there then it is a virus. You need to do a thorough scan. Then I would suggest you install a far better reader, PDF-xchange.

Foxit PDF reader (free) is another very good alternative. It is much less
bloated than Adobe.

If you suspect a virus download, install, update and run MalwareBytes freebie.
It is good at finding and fixing things AV's often miss.

I just did the same thing as Lacey Joe. " I turned on my computer this morning and noticed I had a weird icon in the bottom right hand corner of my screen telling me to install updates for Adobe Reader? I think this is a virus. I went to my add/remove programs and uninstalled it, but the icon is still there? How do I get rid of it?"
Except I clicked to download but it did not ask to by pass by admin with a pass word. Could this be a virus? The icon is now waiting for me to restart my computer to complete it's download. I've already had a virus and now I'm sick that this could be one! Thank you for you any help!

Did you read the date of this post?

If the suggested fixes don't work for you then raise a new post. Nobody is likely to look at this one as it's dated Feb 2011. In any event no two problems are exactly alike.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
