How did a website know my email address?

Specs: Windows XP
i recently downloaded prism video converter from the nch software site, at the end of the process the nch page asked if i would like to sign up to the newsletter i then noticed that it had pre loaded my email addrees into the space provided.

pc has avg free version.

i didnt input this info at anypoint before,during or after the download so how did they get it?

any help or advise would be appriciated.

The browser probably has an auto fill feature. this can be disabled under options. Often a browser will save information that is used repetitively and this information is filled in automatically.

How did the nch website know your email address? It didn't.
If it had that information there would be no need to ask you for it. But your browser, or other local software, has access to that information and it filled it in as a convenience for you.
