Why does Hotmail have to set so many cookies to enable a user to log in?

Mozilla prompts me for each cookie and Hotmail is always wanting to set new ones and modify existing ones. Yahoo! Mail sets one and leaves it at that.

I can't tell you why, but I can tell you when: Right after Microsoft purchased Hotmail (then an independent company) in the mid 90s.

A safe guess on the why would be Microsoft's love of tracking cookies.
