A friend's PC had a number of virus & spyware problems I've removed, but I cannot get HJT to run - it keeps on producing the log & then crashing before I can read/save it with the usual Windows send/not send error message box. I've used the same copy of HJT before & it still runs ok on my machine. Anyone else had experience of this happening. System seems to run fine apart from this.

Whoah, I sure hope that our "buddies" at Cool Web Search haven't come up with a new one-HT crashes when activated! Let's hope it's just a conflicted system file or something.

Did you try running HT in Safe Mode? Next, try "end task" in processes to see if that resolves any conflicts.

Post back and let us know what happens.

Thanks for reply. That was my first thought - tried in Safe Mode with the same result. Not going back around again 'til tomorrow evening (as PC is now running fine she has leapt on it immediately so I've got to prise it away from her to try anything else). I was just hoping I wasn't the only one with this 'problem'.

You're not. Some programs will cause the newest version to crash while doing the services check (I think WinTools/Websearch toolbar are one). Search for Wintools uninstaller and the toolbar in Add/Remove programs (sometimes the uninstallers actually work). I forget the exact wording for them, but you're looking for two entries.

If you're still having trouble, try starting the cleaning using an older version of HijackThis...

HijackThis 1.98.2.

Actually, if you've already run cleaning tools, the uninstall entries may be gone... but the older version of HijackThis should still work.

Many thanks for reply - Wintools was one of the items removed from Add/Remove - may have left something behind - will see if I still have an older version of HJT.

I included a link to a previous version in my first post. And don't forget to also check for the toolbar entry in add/remove.
