Hi everyone. I am really having a hard time. I downloaded hijackthis last night and ran it once. I saved the log file and "fixed" all the red files. I tried to run it this morning and it told me that it experienced an error and couldnt run. It did it twice. I can only run adaware to a certain point before it freezes up and the same applies with spybot. I ran the CWshredder without any problems. I also ran the Trendmicro virus scan online and got rid of two things. I have tried four times to run the panda virus scan and my entire computer freezes up at the same file (L406Masknlgt_leopard.bmp. I have tried to delete the file (its a small file in my Sims program)but everytime I try to access it my computer locks up. Can anyone help me?

Thank you for any help.

could be a bad sector on the hard drive boot to recovery console and do a hard drive check

if good

two utils that are a must for anyone..

http://www.distrowatch
find the link to knoppix ( a version of linux that runs completly off of cdrom (not hard drive))

has ton of utills....

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
download file

this file allows you to build a bootable version of xp that runs completly off of cdrom

the nice thing about this is you can boot the machine outside the normal windows enviroment and run adaware and other utils to remove the problem without the process simply reinstalling itself behind your efforts....

there are versions of pe that people have precompile on their own like super pe
that have over 3.4 gigs of utils on one cd using on the fly compression

so using examples like this
and your own LEGALY BOUGHT software you can create extensive recovery enviroments

i myself use the barebones version so it runs faster....

the other nice feature about barts pe is the ability to install it to hard drive (no repartitioning required it simply places its installation allongside the normal windows install and adds a boot option so you can boot to pe instead of regular windows...

(all machines at my work that are running xp have
1. the ops sys
2. a hiden partition with a striped down version of xp
3. recovery console
4. barts pe enviro hard drive installed

nother handy util is cygwin

adds native posix (linux) compatibility to windows

Ok...I finally was able to delete the file that was freezing everything. I had to delete the entire folder instead of just the file. I was able to run the panda onine scan, and adaware without any problems. I have downloaded the Hijackthis program twice now and for some reason it just isnt working for me.

Drake, thanks for your reply...I will look into the utilities that you suggested.

Thanks a lot!
