i hadn't heard of noadware, the popular ones are ;; spybot s&d, ad-aware se.
and one worth trying is microsoft antispyware.
and install spywareblaster - update it and enable all protection.

Firstly I must thank you for replying to my message and trying to help it is very much appreciated.

Sorry I don't understand the reference to Solarian...

Downloaded and run about:buster but it doesn't seem to work.

Tried downloading Spybot - it appears to download ok then disappears to I haven't been able to run it.

My No adware software keeps telling me an attempt was made to change the IE to about:blank and asks me to Authorize the change which I click 'No' to but it seems to do it anyway...

My Norton Antivirus advises me on starting up Explorer that the virus Trojan.StartPage was detected but it is now safe to use my computer and I also get details of a repaired file C:\Windows\Temp\sp.dll.....

I really appreciate anyone taking the time to reply to this even if it is to tell me to ditch the machine out of the window!!!

Thank you so much for all your help the major geeks website was a god send - finally got my browser to work I think with a mixture of Spybot and Hijack This but I tried so many of your recommendations that I'm not entirely sure what did the trick.
Many thanks again!
