Ok..I installed this file sharing program called Audiogalaxy but later found out the hard way how it is infested with spyware. Advertising scumware such as Gator was discreetly installed in my system without my knowledge or permission! I have since uninstalled what I was able to of this spyware package. However; within my startup registry remains the Gator execution file(GMT.EXE) I can not seem to get rid of it. What do I do? Please help.

Get the newest AdAware version from Lavasoft, ver 5.71, get the signature updates Ref file, run the scan on
Registry and all hard drives.
When scan is complete, you'll get a list of what it found, dump anything to do with gator, web3000, alexa, etc, etc.

I installed AudioGalaxy and was prompted by my firewall that Gator was installed (a HUGE surprise) and trying to make an outbound connection. Here's how I fixed it: I Ctrl-Alt-Deleted for my task list (I have Win2000) and ended the task gmt.exe, then went and deleted the entire GMT folder in C:\Program Files\Common Files. There's one more step: Go to C:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete the .lnk file that will automatically launch it.

Note: Gator did NOT show up in Add/Remove programs.

Good luck, all.

Same thing happens with Kazaa: the SaveNow.exe is also installed without your notice. It is located under "c:\program files\savenow". It's best you shift+delete this. Yes, it is listed in the uninstall screen, but i don't trust spyware uninstalls ;o).
There is also another .exe in your temp folder somewhere (scan your discs for "savenow" files and folders).

When installign kazza just uncheck the option to install savenow and savenow wont be installed... also you should boot up your comp after taking gmt.exe out of your startup, then once making sure it isnt running remove it as said above. Hope this helps.

Si tienes mas dudas, me escribes.

if it's searching, then you probably forgot to delete the shortcut that searches for it at start up.
just go to ur windows/startup folder and delete the shortcut.

You need to remove a file called "GStartup" from Windows>StartMenu>Programs>startup.

THIS IS HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. HIT CTRL ALT DEL FIND THE GMT.exe AND END PROCESS. SEARCH YOUR HARD DRIVE AND DELETE IT. THIS SHOULD REMOVE IT COMPLETELY. IF NOT, DUMP IT FROM YOUR REGISTRY ALSO.

i had both GMT.exe and cmerys.exe running on my computer. I removed them tis way:
1)ctrl+alt+del and cancel running them
2)remove references to them in the startup menu
3)using the find tool in the regedit utility, i removed any keys refering to them (find next needed to be used)
4) reboot the machine
5) search and delete these files and the folders in which they reside

I am running win98 and this worked 4 me, but when I attempted to do this for a friend running 2000 proffesional I couldn't get it to work

after removing the GMT folder from windows/common files/gmt, go to your START button (on the bottom left corner of screen), click on RUN, then type in, msconfig (if you're using windows 98)

Go to the Startup tab and search the list for, GStartup ... make sure it's unchecked and you're good to go. the computer will no longer search for the GMT.exe file when it starts.

You need to install a fire wall like "Zone Alarm" (a free fire wall)
and this application verifies all the little programs who go on the internet. With this fire wall you can block Gator (or CME) to go on the internet.
Do it quickly because Gator = "big brother"...he knows all your surfing sites...look if you're curious in : commun files/gmt/scripts you'll discover the spy with a big "S".
Take care :)
