hey, IS there a virus that will stay installed after a low-level format, and reinstallation of WinXp. Even tho a virus scanner wont detect it but can a virus really get that far?? Or am i dreaming, and should look into something else. Becuase i got a laptop that is freakin out (basically getting BSODs) but its only done this after getting this virus. This was with the previous owner so i dont know what has happened other than that.

A truely wise person doesn't deny his flaws, but embraces them.

Ah, the "everything is a virus" virus.

Most probable is a hardware issue

Ah yes, the widely heralded but seldom seen low level format.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Sure - that phrase goes back twenty years, and is no longer truly applicable (yet it persists)

Writing zeros (aka "zeroing") is more accurate

With a complete fresh start, you would be free from any sort of infection - although if you go online, make sure the Windows firewall is activated.

Malware exists that can overwrite the BIOS, but those things don't "live" there, waiting to reinfect
