I apologize if this is a repost:

Hi, I've run skybot, adaaware, and mcafee and I can't get rid of what seems to be the peper trojan based on other people's descriptions.

1. Use the uninstall tool - download from: http://home01.wxs.nl/~kleyn080/uninst.exe. Double click on uninst.exe, let it run and terminate.

2. Delete all the associated files with drpeper - download from http://www.mjc1.com/files/mo/drpeper.html. Double click drpepertobackup, it will self extract to C:. With the text in the box highlighted, click start.

3. Go to the file C:\drpeper\Find backup and Delete Peper files.vbs and double click.

4. A box will appear, copy and paste: Vju9.exe and hit ok.

5. A second box will appear, copy and paste XhrY12.exe and hit ok.

6. It will find all the files, delete them and will make backups in the same folder. It'll open a text file (Peper.txt) with the list of all files deleted. Make sure it is saved.

Thanks for the advice www.

I just want to clarify one thing: I've noticed that other people have been instructed to paste two 2 *.exe files that were found in their system32 folders.

I don't need to do that. Is there any way to identify which of those *.exe files I need to paste in after step 3.

thanks.

You do need to paste 2 files for this to work!

There also appears to be a number of accepted combinations to do this at present,
and this is one that has been tried and tested.

4. A box will appear, copy and paste: Mhw0.exe and hit ok.

5. A second box will appear, copy and paste Cja1K.exe and hit ok.

6. It will find all the files, delete them and will make backups in the same folder. It'll open a text file (Peper.txt) with the list of all files deleted. Make sure it is saved. Please post that list here.
Reboot and rescan with Hjt and repost the log.

If peper is still present it will show up and can be redone.

Ok I did what was suggested and this is what happened. After I entered Mhw0.exe, it said it deleted HzwVd25s.exe and Mhw0.exe. When I tried to enter Cja1k.exe, it said it didn't exist. In essence, I only got to step 4.

After a reboot here's what I got:

hmmmm after I reboot, my computer is frozen for a while and I get a dialog box that says the on access NT scanner encountered a problem and has to shut down. After I close that box, my computer works fine. Is there something I can do about that?

Not sure about your error, lets find out
if peper is gone.

Credit goes to Tom41 for this:

Download 2xExplorer: http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/2xExplorer.zip
(rightclick on the link and choose "Save Target As").
Unzip 2xExplorer. Double click and set up the following:

Menu> View> Options > Show hidden files should be checked > ok.

Menu > Tools > Find Files:

Named: *.exe
Look in: (browse or paste in) C:\WINDOWS\System32

Check the following: 'Use Text Constraints', 'Search non-text files' and in the 'Find What' paste: kern32

All other fields leave unchecked!

Hit the 'Find' tab...

The scan will run for few seconds and show the results. Rightclick then > print list >right click > select all > copy and post it.

Thank you all so much for your help, getting rid of that peper trojan was taking up a lot of my time. I just can't believe it passes mcafee, adaware, and skybot. Scary stuff.

Normally I would say,"Please post another topic for your new thread and I'll answer it there"
but as this piece of advice didn't appear in the previous reply,
you get lucky...

*Note: Sometimes you will get a VBS script error during this process. If that happens, INVERT the order of the files ie....the first one second;and the second one first. (only in the event of the VBS script error.)

NB. Mbenya, Be aware you will have different random file names in your log,
and will need to do your own HijackThis scan, and have it looked at.

Ice,

I found this forum because I have also had trouble trying to get rid of this rads01. I went through the process you listed and when I got to step 4 and pasted "Vju9.exe" in the box it told me the "Vju9.exe" does not exist. I also tried the other 3 "exe" files you refered to with the same results.

I went ahead and got hjt and scanned with the following results:

yep, sure.
We had a useful development in our learning curve on this one.
Could yould repost your log in a new topic and title it "Quadrogram or Peper",
and list the program you used to find it and all the notification it gives.
[I would like to get that title into the search engines.]
Thanks
Ice

All this ONLY refers to another user; not you. Those files change for EACH user.
>>>>>>>>>>
when I got to step 4 and pasted "Vju9.exe" in the box it told me the "Vju9.exe" does not exist. I also tried the other 3 "exe" files you refered to with the same results
>>>>>>>>>
Your files will be different because peper generates different random filenames for each infection.
That's why we ask you to post your unique log to have a look at it and provide your unique solution.

Ab,
I should have picked up on this earlier.

"These two sites I put in my restricted
sites zone.
rads01.quadrogram.com" etc

Thanks for the heads up.
It helped on another post.
FYI,
Up to this point, I thought there was only one infection that caused an
04 [14 character] line in HjT logs >> peper

There is another one >>>> rads01.quadrogram

It also has only one usually 8 random character filename in running processes C:\windows\system32\ in the same area that peper appears,
whereas we know that peper almost always has two, with usually much shorter filenames, often 4,5 or 6 characters.

It appears likely that the peper removal process will nail this as well, but thats yet to be verified. Let me know if you hear of any followups on this. ta.

Stitch,
Could you repost a new topic of your own;
it can get confusing looking at different logs in the same post.
Check you are updated through windows update; and repost your log; someone will help.

No peper on this log.
You have some CoolWebSearch hijacks and will need to run CWShredder.exe
*Always paste *your* problem in a "NEW TOPIC" and not in someone else's thread.
Thanks,
hth
