Subject: HELP! Weird zip file on startup
OS: Windows 2000
CPU/Ram: not sure
Comment:

well I've done it again. Picked up some sort of file. Whenever I start up my Windows 2000, it automatically opens WINZIP which is now looking for a deleted file c:/WINNT/Melda.zip (I managed I think to shred with with CWshredder). Initially, i think it set up a program in my C: drive called "myway and search bar". I deleted those contents too. ItBut it's annoying to have this on WINZIP error on startup everytime. I looked in HT. I tried to blow away what files looked wrong (ignore these files - it's a problem I've been dealing with longer than this winzip problem and in another thread:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://t.muxa.cc/h.php?aid=227 (obfuscated)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://t.muxa.cc/s.php?aid=227 (obfuscated)

still can't get rid of those. but that's another problem. Here's my log. what's in my startup that is the connection to searching for this Melda.zip file??? how do I find it and get rid of it?

if anyone can help, I would appreciate it. I'm at my wits end with these various viruses. Also, yes, I run Ad-Aware, and I've downloaded yesterday all the Windows and IE updates/patches that it said I required.

Thanks.

Might want to try reading this:

Sounds a lot like you're problem. I'm not an expert on removal but you could do an online scan at www.trojanscan.com.

No, that wasn't it. did a full scan.

Can someone look at my logs and figure out how to get this start-up sequence from stopping?

Now THAT is a full scan. Did you happen to run Ad-Aware and Spybot before you posted this? If not this post will probably get deleted. You need to follow procedure.

I did run both those scans. Came up with nothing. I think I CWshredder got the exe file but something was left over in windows that was triggering it to unzip on start-up. That wasn't found.

You know what found the virus? (btw, I did some research - it's the Ronoper B virus).

Panda Activescan 5.0. Found it and a bunch of other infected files. Stuff that Norton and Trojanscan missed. Free online scan. Took 45 minutes. completely worthwhile.

I think I have it solved.

yup. Panda ActiveScan 5.0 caught the file (melda.src) plus a bunch of others. It's gone! It was definitely the Ronober B virus.

The only problem I still have is residuals from a browser hijacker that is no longer slamming my homepage, but I can't seem to get rid of the resulting files...arghh
