Comment: Hi people! could anyone pls tell me what to do coz i think i have a virus! my virus scanners are not picking up anything, i've tried norton 2002, pc-cillen 2002 and Mcaffee 4 (updated). I was using win 2000, and seem to be getting a lot of crashes saying 'dumping of memory'. also, sometimes i cant install programs or have problems unzipping. with some programs, if i did manage to install it, it just wont open! i did format the drive and switch to winxp...which again i encountered some problems installing. winxp was more a little more stable, but still had problems with installing and opening some programs. oh, i also had problems using my virus scanners when i tried scanning, sometimes the pc would reset, this happened in both winxp and win 2000...can anyone please help me identify is this virus? and what to do? i just really hope i dont need to replace my parts. thanks in advance

Reply: (edit)With three Avirus systems saying no virus, I would tend to agree.. If you have two Operating Systems and three antivirus programs, I suspect you have just run out of resources. You might try disabling or uninstalling one or two antivirus programs, just to see the results.

Reply: (edit)thx for the advice geezer. but i did'nt have all 3 on at once. i originally had norton on, but because i was'nt picking up anything, i tried using pc-cillen and mcaffee by themselves. pc-cillen wont install if you had another virus scanner on anyway. i'm thinking its a virus because i had experienced this before. back then, i got the guy who built the pc for me to have a look, which he said my pc was infected with a virus. to solve the problem, he said i had to replace the memory, cpu, motherboard and hard drive, because those were the parts that were infected....which i did'nt have much choice....i just hope there must be a way round it...coz i cant afford to spend that much again...

Reply: (edit)The memory is wiped as soon as your pc is switched off so no virus can reside there, same with your CPU. The BIOS can be infected with a virus but it can usually be cleared by changing a jumper on the motherboard for a few seconds. See your manuals. Hard drives can be infected but repartitioning and formatting should remove it especially if you use a low level formatter which is usually available free from the manufacturers website which will format everything on the drive including the master boot record and remove any viruses that may be lurking on that. Sorry but the guy who told you to replace all this stuff, he ripped you off.
