OS: XP Pro 2002 SP1
CPU/Ram: P4 / 256
Comment:

I'm working on getting rid of all the problems with popups and my start page being changed (teen-biz related). I have already run Spybot and CWShredder. I would appreciate any help on what to fix from my Hijackthis log. Thanks.

Yes I downloaded the newest versions. CWShredder did find some CWS stuff, so that was one issue, but the main problem that got me started on trying to fix all this was a bunch of porn photo gallery popups, porn sites being added to favorites, and the startpage being changed to a porn site. NAV found and deleted a Trojan called ByteVerify, but that didn't solve the problem, and I ended up here.

I am following the steps others have posted -- Spybot or Ad-aware, CWShredder, and HjT -- and my next step is to find out what to fix from my HjT log.

Congrats on following the procedure; you will have cleared up much junk from the system. And you installed Sun Java which removes that ByteVerify exploit- good !
Still a bit to go but you seem pretty committed to the task.

First, go to Add/Remove programs and remove any of these that you find:
Attune
AttuneClientEngine
Aveo Attune
CometCursor
CometShopper
CometSystems
**Comet...[Anything starting with comet]
HXDL
Hxiul ...Usually it's simply 'Comet'

Reboot, rescan with Hijack This and, with all browser windows closed, place a check next to any of the items I listed above that remain and click "Fix Checked".

Thanks for the help Iceblue -- I'm going to work on this now and see what happens. But I have another question ...

Do you have any further opinion about the items below that you mentioned, if I explain that I use WebEx as a service through Intuit/Quickbooks to remotely access the computer? And is the O16 line a definite one to be fixed?

I'll post my new log here after my fixes, if you would be so kind as to check it again.

Thanks again, and Merry Christmas.

If you actively use Webex for Intuit then that is fine to keep them. They looked suss as running processes, but remote access explains that, thanks.
(The activeX components only need looking at if recurrent problems occur after everything else is fixed, they can be corrupted or contaminated; and a legit program will reload them if required)
eg if red.clientapps recurs after removal then we look for the source...looks like thats happening, but first
*the log doubled up - probably a cut'n'paste typo- could you run that one more time;
after closing all browsers and fixing:

I finally got back to this a week later! Please let me know if I need to do anything else. I suppose I should have also clarified that I am doing all of this on a friend's computer through the remote acces I mentioned previously. The friend said he hasn't had any problems since I was working on this stuff last weekend.

Thanks again for all the help.
