Subject: Help me remove ALL Spyzapper crap!
OS: XP home
CPU/Ram: Athlon AMD 2800+/512MB
Comment:

I upgraded AOL 8.0 to 9.0 SE, first big mistake. When I realized what I had done, I spent over 3 hours removing and uninstalling all the computer-bogging crap that comes with 9.0SE, that is, all I could find. Spyzapper kept appearing on boot-up no matter what I did to stop/block scan or remove AOLLaunch.exe file (first changed it to "read only" then deleted it altogether. I went to AOL Tech Live help THREE times, they insist that that's all you can do, disable the scan, and tell me there are no files or components actually loaded on my PC to delete relating to Spyzapper. After reading many threads/forums about this subject, I have to say that I don't believe that this is true, and that there are indeed hidden files that cause continuing communication with AOL Spyware/Spyzapper. One thread suggest that OPTSCAN files are AOL's OWN version of spyware, spying on AOL subscribers! My computer performance has been compromised considerably since this huge mistake, can anyone help me truly end this Spyzapper nightmare once and for all? No files can be found in either AOL (c-drive/program files) nor in Add/Remove/Change programs in Control Panel. Thank you in advance for your assistance in removing this volatile nuisance of a program. LoriKaehu

I forgot to mention that I did uninstall AOL version 9.0 SE and am back on version 8.0, but still have Spyzapper issues in spite of the total uninstall. Thanks.

Actually, I found this post by abnormal on how to turn it off

If you don't want SpyZapper to check for spyware and other programs that can interfere with your online experience, you can easily turn it off.
1. Go to AOL® Keyword: SpyZapper.
2. On the SpyZapper - Settings screen, click Do not block any programs; do not check my computer.
3. Click Save. SpyZapper will stop checking your computer for the specific spyware and other programs that can interfere with your online experience.

Turning off SpyZapper does not turn off AOL Spyware Protection from conducting regular scans.

Or check add/remove in control panel

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks
