Help!! I am extremely ignorant about viruses and pc's in general. I have trend micros pc-cillin on realtime scan and set to full scan twice a week - on the full scan just now it has said virus detected JS_EXCEPTION.GEN what do I do to get rid of it - I cant even find what was infected when I go to the log it says Documents and Setting... and when I click it doesnt give me the full location how do I find it?? I am also at a loss to how I could get this virus - I have opened no email and cant remember downloading anything for sometime, I also have my AV on realtime scan. I am going to the Norton website now but any help and additional info from you guys would be more than appreciated.

Here's a link to the write up & removal instructions at the Norton site
JS.Exception.Exploit

After you think you're clean I'd run an online virus scan at either Panda or House Call to verify you are virus free
Good luck

If you're using Windows ME or Windows XP you'll also need to remove it from your Restore folder, this Norton link will tell you how
Good luck
Cannot repair, quarantine, or delete a virus found in the _RESTORE or System volume information folder

Cheers DW - have followed instructions. Can anyone tell me where I might have got this from, have had no dodgy emails and havent downloaded anything from the net at all apart from a small picture of my home village which was on the council site!!

Any ideas where this kind of virus originates and why my realtime scan (continuously updated) never found (it was a manual scan that did). Cheers again

Mary, you can get it from websites that use popups to deliver the virus package. Go to PC Pitstop, and run their full performance scan and analysis program. It will tell you how your computers performance is. I think the best feature is the security analysis and recommended steps to make your computer more secure. Take care!

Mary,

I got the same virus a few weeks ago, my real time PC-cillin program detected it, the "infection" was as a result of logging into a site that supports this crap, PC-cillin detected it and blocked it, i didnt need to do anything further though i did a complete scan and was clean,

As regards your real time Scan not detecting it, i think u need to go back and check to see if u have "Web security" checked, this may be the reason that it didnt pick it up, im surprised that it didnt detect it,

Do what Capt has suggested, log into PCpitstop and do their security test, its amazing how vunerable your PC is eventhough we almost all use antivirus and firewall programs, that site is a must check out site for everyone,

regards,

The best antivirus program I've ever used is AVG from grisoft.com. It is free to al those not living in Europe.
(and no, that does not mean that it is free to all the dead people in Europe! :) )
It has saved my system on a few occasions, and runs so much better than and isn't such a memory hog like Norton or McAffee.
Just a suggestion...
