Subject: Help, I'm lost!
OS: XP
CPU/Ram: pentium 1.7Ghz/512mb
Model/Manufacturer: Acer Aspire
Comment:

Here goes. About 3 weeks ago my computer froze up and so I turned it off using the power button. When I turned it back on it did a disk check as I expected but it took about 3hours! When I finally got back on my computer everything seemed really slow, like opening programs etc. Next time I went to start up my computer it did a disk check again, this time it took almost 8hours!! I deleted my virus protection program –wasn’t sure if it was doing it’s job- and installed a friend’s McAfee protection program and ran a scan. Ended up deleting about 20 files in total, mostly adware stuff I think. Still my computer is slow and wants to do a disk check each time I turn it on, but now I just skip it. I tried a system restore but it would not work. Also my sound is really crackly now like when I try playing music either using iTunes or RealPlayer-same result. I only just realised last night that my windows firewall was turned off, not sure long it has been like that, but the McAfee one has been on the past week anyway. I think that’s all, haven’t really got any idea how to sort this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Please post a Hijack This log so that the files associated with the virus/spyware/hijacker can be identified.

Please download HJTsetup.exe from this link http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click "next" in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
Put a check by "Create a desktop icon" then click "Next" again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click "Finish" and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log and post it in this thread.

Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.

Please download SmitRemFix from this link http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/Smitfra... Then extract the contents to your desktop.
!!!! Only run option #1 as runing the other options on an uninfected computer will damage the desktop.!!!!
Open the "SmitfraudFix" folder and double-click "smitfraudfix.cmd"
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing " Y " and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if "wininet.dll " is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing "Y" and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Please download ComboFix to the desktop from this link:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe

Double-click combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
(Don't click on the window while the program is running, it may cause your system to hang.)

Please post the combofix.txt log and a new Hijack This log please.

Ok, I have followed the steps so far but when it came to rebooting my computer and running it in safe mode it didn't work. I got the screen up and selected 'safe mode' and then the os but then the screen went black and some text appeared. I left it each time -tried it twice- for about 1hour and it didnt change so I just restarted. Unsure of the steps to take now. Will try the same method next time I power up but any further input as to why it may not have worked would be very helpful. Thanks

Please download Dr Web CureIt to your desktop from this link ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan.
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives.
A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable.
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log on your desktop.

Don't mean to butt in, but it also seems wise to have this user run diagnostics from the Harddrive mfg to check for problems with the drive not related to spyware and viruses.

One more cleanup proceedure.

Please download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/ We will need it later in safe mode

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware We will need this later in safe mode

Be sure to update AVG Anti- Spyware

Empty the restore folder. Go to start>control panel>system>system restore tab>check the box beside "turn off system restore>apply (takes a minute)>ok. Go back and uncheck the box to turn system restore back on>apply>ok.

Run AVG Anti-spyware from normal mode and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.

AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.

Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).

Post the results of the AVG-Antispyware scan.

Then try to boot into safe mode and let me know what happens.

Hey, I tried to reboot in safe mode but once again it did not work. Just got a black screen full of text again.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your C:\.

Then try this:

Reboot into safe mode and when the black screen appears and the text "safe mode" is displayed in the corners, open the taskmanager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and find "explorer.exe . Click on it in the list and click "Terminate". This will probably take at least 3 to 5 minutes.
Once Explorer is terminated you'll be able to navigate with the mouse, but you will have a desktop without icons.

Remember where you installed the "VundoFix" (Desktop hopefully). Open the taskmanager again, and click "file" then click "run" in the toolbar. Type in the filepath to the VundoFix in the scrollbar and hit enter.
The default location of the VundoFix is here :

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USERNAME\Desktop\VundoFix.exe

Replace "your username" with "ever what your user name is".
Then click "ok".

Post the log located at Vundofix.txt and try to boot into safe mode again and let me know what happens.

I got to the screen where you choose 'safe mode' and tried task manager there but pressing the buttons just rebooted my computer. Tried it again but on the screen after selecting 'safe mode' where it asks about operating system. Same happened -rebooted. Tried again, 'safe mode' selected operating sytem, then when the screen full of text came i pressed ctrl+alt+del and nothing happened. Can it be done in normal mode after the computer is fully booted up or am have I misunderstood the instructions?

Run Vundofix from normal mode.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Post the log located at C:Vundofix.txt.

If anything was found and fixed then try safe mode again.

Do you happen to have a xp cd?

I can lay my hands on an XP disc yeah. Am a student so would have to have it posted from my home. Nothing was fixed so I didn't try 'safe mode' again.

For now do not try any other methods of getting into safe mode or you may end up in a "boot loop" as there are other ways to get in that alter the boot.ini files and cause a continuous boot cycle.

Hey, its been a while since I was on here and I'm still having the same problems although not quite as extreme. I am now able to boot up in safe mode though by using
start
run
"msconfig"
then changing something there. Read something online how to do it. Did a scan using AVG in safe mode and it found no threats but said there was a boot up error in the C drive... I'm not sure what this means. So will I finally be able to fix my problem?
Thanks
