Subject: help, i have a desktop virus
Comment:

Hi all,

I seem to have some sort of virus o my computer. Basically all the icons keep moving around . Everything else is fine, and if I right-click, then click arrange icons, I can access everything if I do it immidietly, but after a few seconds the icons start moving and run away from the mouse.

Anyone know what it is?

Cheers

Alan

Does it only occur when u online?
If yes, than it is a sign of hacker. Try ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com). Its free and really good.
If no, try to scan ur system for viruses. For online scanner go to: http://housecall.antivirus.com/ for free online scanner

You probably have the W32.Magistr virus. See Symantec's write up:

I, too have a crazy desktop.Sometimes the icons all fly to one corner of the desktop and gather there until I move the mouse and they go elsewhere.I have to sneak up on an icon in order to click it.
Also my games seem to be affected. The pointer is very slow and on a ball game the ball is very slow.

I have the same virus where the icons fly around the screen. I check auto arrange and at least they stay in one place.

I know exactly when it started. On May 7, 2002 at 1:07 pm, against ALL my computer logic, principles, not to mention "good old common sense" I opened a greetings.exe file. I did not save it to my disk. In fact, I opened the ReadMe file first thinking I would be safe. Alas, I was wrong. Now, I have a jumping computer. Not only that, I deleted everything I could. I have been in explorer for days looking for files that were created on that day.

I HAVE HAD NO LUCK AND I AM READY TO THROW THIS COMPUTER IN THE JUNK PILE.

HELP!

I don't have the exact same situation, my icons just never seem to stay where I arrange. I put them in nice neat orderly groups. When I start up again, they are mixed up. I can click them and they don't run away. Any ideas will be appreciated.
