hi everyone
i need help..i have a virus on my computer (running Win ME) that WILL not go away. I think I got it through my college network and I just can't seem to kick it off my drive. Norton Auto-protect pops up with thousands of messages saying that it found another file infected...I repair or quarantine one, and more and more just pop up within seconds. I've used fixfun.exe several times, and its seemed to work but temporarily, but then it just comes back. I have NO file on my hard drive called flcss.exe at all, either.I don't know if I actually am getting rid of it and then getting it back through my network, or what....
What do I do? Please, please, please help.
Thanks,
christina

hi christina,
you have the fun love virus.
you can get the fix at any reputable anti-virus company such as f-secure, sophos, panda
norton etc.
the directions for cleaning are simple

hi christina,
addendum to previous post:
sorry for the error, if fixfun does not work
then go to the registry and check all your start up programs in your major hotkeys such as hklocal machine, hkcurrent users, hkuser:
check the run, runonce,runservices etc.
accessing these start up keys is simple:
do hklocal machine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run....then click on run to see whats in it. same for runservices, runonce etc.
if you see a key with a strange .exe that is running delete the reference in the key by right clicking on the key and deleting the reference in the text box.
then reboot your machine.
then do a check of your winini, sysini, autoexec bat files..... access them through system info.... check the start up folders such as boot etc. if something looks strange or out of place and shouldn't be there then delete the reference to that file
hope this helps,
cheers,
murve

Murve,
Thanks so much for writing back!
I checked my registry files like you suggested but I didn't see anything that I could definitely label as an unusual file. I'm not sure where I should go from here.
In the meantime, Norton keeps popping up with alerts that it's infecting files, but it's favorite seems to be "C:\windows\dvdplay.exe" I have tried to repair it...it may or may not let me repair it or quarantine it and it has (supposedly) deleted it, but it still pops up. Is this something I should worry about, or is it a fluke that it keeps coming up with that particular file?
Still confused!
Thanks,
christina

hi christina,
question you are running ME right?
do you have a dvd player?
if you do or don't, makes no difference>
you have to re-install dvdplay.exe it may have been corrupted. dvdplay.exe is a dvd driver it comes bundled with ME and win2000, you may need to download a new copy.
as for norton, i would uninstall it using the add and delete program in your controll panel ( go to the norton site and follow their instructions for uninstalling) and then re-install it, get the latest virus definitions and then do a full scan and see what comes up, or install a free trial of Kapersky labs anti-virus and see what comes up. Kapersky is a very good anti-virus prog. it scans for virii, trojans, and WORMS, which i think is what you have.
also are you running any kind of firewall and do you scan for trojans? if not go to www.thepublicworks.com security section and download a free firewall, also download Regprot,a free registry monitor and from Sysinternals, TDImon and Promon, free port and process monitors. also go to wilders.org and download a free 30 day trial of Trojan Hunter and scan your machine for trojans
hope this helps, keep in touch
all the best,
murve

ok murve
i would have to support the registry option you did provide but as to uninstall the V sCanner don't even think twice about doing this. reason why norton is saying the file is infected is because the virus had attached it self to the file the best way is to try and delete the file and reinstall the software for you dvd.
