Here's my deal.
I've rebuilt my system after getting a nasty nasty virus.
I loaded XP on a Maxtor 200 Gig, it ran great for about a week. I've rebooted about 20 times (video, soundcard, antivirus, other drivers.....)
Then all of a sudden on a reboot, it sits at the "Loading DMI Data....." screen. Then a few quick reboots later, it says something about a possible virus.
So i replaced the master drive with an old HD with the same operating system, and it runs fine, however, i cant access my 200 gig maxtor. I click on it in Windows Explorer and it says "Drive is not formatted, do you wish to format it now?"

Any ideas, bad HD something?

Need more info.

What does the BIOS say about the 200GB?

Does either HD need (or refuse) cable select?

Same SP on both HDs?

If your BIOS came witha built in virus checker, disable it until you get everything up and running.

Yeah, the bios recognizes the drive as a master or a slave, and with cable select.

Yeah, same SP on both drives. Everything was running fine, i cleaned up the virus, but on a reboot, it failed to load operating system.
One thing i noticed after unsuccesfully trying to setup the drive back up, it was super hot. Much hotter than any other drive i've felt before. Does a 200 gig put out more heat than a 80 gig?

I'll try disabling the BIOS Virus checker, but i dont see how that should help. I'm not sure when i turned it on, after the first failed operating system load.....

Thanx alot guys.....it feels good to talk about it.......lol

BFH,

I think the hot drive is the clue.

Yeah, somethings not right. I'm going to perform a low level format and i'll keep an eye on the temps.

Its not a bios thing, cuz all my other drives run fine. Damn maxtor.....

If you somehow manage to low level format it, it will probably be toast.
