Hello. I am a pretty inquisitive person, and when me and my friend got talking about virus scanners and such, I decided to show her how AVG detects (as it did once for me when I invoked it) double file extensions.

So I tried giving a file two or more extensions and AVG did not bat an eyelid. However, it did before on my Windows 2000 system some months ago.

Its the latest version, 7.5

Other than that my system works flawlessly.

Any clues?

No authoritative answer here really but I think you may not have experienced this abnormality if you ran the premium AVG edition (not the free AVG).

I ran the free one both times.

Call it my inquisitive nature.

Thank you for replying -- have a nice day.

As you probably know, some viral file attachments appear with a double file extension. This is to fool those who don't show all file extensions into thinking they safe. For example:

"file.jpg.pif" would show as just "file.jpg" which looks like a harmless picture. Really it is a pif file named "file.jpg"

My guess is that AVG only finds double file extensions which are on their data base as known viral attachments, or it may be that they have to take a specific form such as a program file.

Another possibility is that your email client is not allowing certain file extensions to be downloaded (eg programs such as .pif .bat .exe).

I don't know for cert but the above are my best guesses.

perhaps, and thanks both of you.

Anyway I shall think about this more tomorrow (its hardly life and death anyway) as it is late here in Scotland.

Night everyone.

Hello Scotland, and greetings from New England.
I've been using the (free) AVG for about a year now and I'm very pleased with it. I was using McAfee for a few years but got rid of it when they released (or forced)their new all-in-one security package on everyone.

Anyways, never had any troubles with AVG...and it seems to get new updated definitions very often too.

Me too. I used McAfee, until I sought an alternative. Thankfully, my shutdown time dropped from some 2 minutes to about 10 seconds, for one thing, just by getting AVG instead of McAfee.

This was just my inquisitive mind playing tricks on me and to be honest I probably did something different each time. (I am referring to the multiple file extensions thing)

Yes, compound extensions are only confusing to humans (especially if they fail to change the M$ file viewing defaults) - - computers know better, and are not fooled

Well, if that was a dig, I did change the file viewing defaults. No offense Jboy, but I can never tell if you are just joking around or trying to be offensive.

Believe me, if that were the case, there would be little (if any) doubt

As stated, computers can't be tricked that way - - compound extensions are a form of 'social engineering' intended to mislead the unwary or inexperienced - - which a little thought on the matter might've informed you

You should raise a new post - no two problems are alike and not many folk will come back to this old post now. Apart from anything else we don't know what operating system you are running.

There might be an uninstall provided in your Start Menu (All Programs if you are XP).

AVG is usually just fine.
