Hard Drive data

Specs: Windows XP
I have a PC (windows xp) and recently got a virus (due to AVG not catching it) and getting ready to put the hard drive in an enclosure to transfer it to a new Laptop..... my question is: Can i scan and clean the old hard drive onto the new labtop (without opening any files) and just use the free trial version of MCAFEE or NoRTON already installed on the new computer - Or would i still be transferring the virus from the old pc to the new computer?

Also, what do i need to back up any files for the future and how do i do this?

thank you
b-

You can scan the drive once you connect it. It's not necessary to open any files.

Why not use the external drive for backup once you clean it?

Scan all partitions.
