Hacked or not hacked?

My firewall detected that two programs were modified. One was "Explorer.exe." I did not let it be modified as this was clearly a hack. This occured right after I downloaded a Windows Update. The next day a file in the System32 Folder called "Services" was changed. I let it modify itself and I quarantined the item as I thought this was a Windows Update modification hence the s"ervices" part as in "Windows 2000 service pack." How can I determine if this is a hack or a Windows update?

When you conduct a windows update.. throught Microsoft's website, your files will be modified. That was not a hack or a hack attempt as long as you connected to Microsoft the proper way, via windows update.
If what you are describing is Zonealarm notifing you that Explorer.exe was modified after you onducted the update, that is perfectly normal occurrence.
