gradually increasing jpg filesize?

Specs: winXP home
I'm fixing a friends laptop, when I got it no os would mount the hard drive... so I pulled it out and did a raw recovery in another machine.
after recovering the 36gb of jpg's I realized there were not nearly enough files to add up to this filesize. If I organize the pictures by filesize they gradually increase in size from -50k to +900mb with NO block of same filesize at around 1mb like there should be. Although my virus scans did not find anything. Avast treated some of the jpg's as directories as it was scaning. "it was scanning files within the jpg's."
of course I'm planning on telling her the data isn't stable since it probably contains whatever caused this problem, but I was just curious what this is, since I haven't seen it before.

Trojan. Get better AV or reload from clean sources.

Check all removable media in scans.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
