I've noticed recently that the google search links I go to, most of them end up taking me to an advertisement site related to my search. I read around this site that it has happened to some people already. I use Firefox and not IE. An Avira Antivirus scan was stopped and I think my laptop rebooted by itself. I was able to do a Malwarebyte scan and got 8 infections. It told me to restart so I did, but while booting it restarted itself and I got the safe mode, etc...options, after a few tries I was able to log in windows successfully. I had to manually turn off the laptop since it froze in a black screen during boot up so I'm not sure if everything that was detected was deleted.
