Hi my laptop has the google redirect virus to the effect that any search results will be redirected to unwanted advertisement pages. Plus it seems to be having a effect on downloads (they won't open, including any new anti-spyware I try to get).
I'm not really that computer savvy but any help or solutions would be gratefully received.

You can start off by running Malwarebytes, update it and remove all it finds:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_m...
Then you may want to download and install Avast Free and ALLOW it to do a bootscan on reboot.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_a...
Avast will find and help remove any rootkits or other infections on the PC.
If you can't download them using the infected PC, get them on another PC and put them on a thumbdrive or burn them onto a CD and then use them on the problem PC

I ran avast and it deleted one trojan and the google problem seems to have been removed thanks. However, when I attempted a download after the program had run, the download showed as complete, but when I right click the complete download, the 'open' option is grey and unusable. Am I just doing something wrong?
Plus, I uploaded the programs via memory stick but can't open them as an error message tells me 'Windows cannot open the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item,' even when I run as administrator.

Hmmmm, you are still infested with problems.
Download Unhackme:
http://www.greatis.com/unhackme/dow...
Follow the beginners guide on the left of the download page.
Run the scans untill the PC is clean. When something is found
unhackme gives many suggestions. Follow them and DON'T
delete anything you don't know....google it and see if it's safe to
delete.
Good Luck
