Got the search-engine redirecting virus and my AVG-Free doesn't come up with anything in the scan. Went ahead and downloaded the MalwareBytes1 link as I've seen this as the first step in many of these posts, but it could only repair 30 of the 460 or so problems, as the rest were restricted. I could not rename the set-up file, however, as I was never given an option to (using FireFox, if that has anything to do with it). If it logged anything, I can't find where and do not see a "logs" tab. Also downloaded the HijackThis software; have that log saved. I am completely computer-illiterate, so any help in the most reader's digest way would be greatly appreciated, as this is an absolutely obnoxious virus!
Also, I've read it was contracted from a PDF JavaScript weakness? Is there any way to make sure I don't get it again? I think I know which PDF I clicked on that was infected, but it looked like an honest enough file, so there's no way I'd know not to click on another one.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Update:
Realized I'd downloaded the incorrect Malwarebyte's thing. Have found and downloaded the correct one, and am currently running the quickscan. I do see a "logs" tab now.The more I've read about this virus, the more I think mine may be a variant. I've taken a look at my wdmaud files (of which there are two), and they are all from Microsoft. Also, this problem with redirecting does not happen only on the first page of results, and there are no apparent ways to tell that a site is an imposter before clicking on it, contrary to what I've seen in a few screenshots.
Plus this all seems to have first cropped up around January of this year. I'm either late in the game or it's a newer strain.
I'm praying someone can help me!
