Please run the following scans and post their logs.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these sites:

MalwareBytes1

MalwareBytes2

1. Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
2. Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
3. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
4. Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan. The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
5. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
6. Make sure that everything found is checked, and click Remove Selected.
7. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
8. The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
9. Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Please download and install the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2:

Download the "HijackThis" Installer from this link:
Hijack This

1. Save " HJTInstall.exe" to your desktop.
2. Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
5.Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
7. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
8. Paste the log in your next reply.
9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Thank you for the prompt reply.

When I click the malwarebytes1 or 2 no page is displayed or there is no auto download that is taking place either. Do I need to check for certain settings on my browser window ... I am tried using both mozilla and explorer to open it.

Please advise.
Thank You

Maybe the baddie has damaged your host file.

Please download HostsXpert from the following link:

HostsXpert

Extract the HostsXpert.zip by doing the following:Right-click HostsXpert.zip and select extract all – Follow the wizard and extract it to your DesktopClick Finish. Double-click the HostsXpert folder and then double-click HostsXpert.exe. Click “ Restore MS Hosts File” and press OK.Exit the program.

Note: if you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

I did as instructed, still no luck.

I am not a computer junkie, so I do not have any idea about custom host files, if you can explain that in little detail on where and how to find them and what to do with them?

Is it possible that I can get url to the exact website from where I can download the malwarebytes and Hijack This? I am presuming that my computer is not recognizing links to url but I have to type it in to get there ... if it makes any sense to you.

Thanks

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode with Networking by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the option to run Safe Mode with Networking, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Download Hijack This, then Malwarebytes and update MWB.

Restart in normal, run them and post their logs if possible.

NOTE: When I completed the Malwarebytes scan, I clicked 'ok' for computer restart as asked, but then my laptop took 30minutes and still did not "shut down" completely to restart on its own ... though it showed message "Windows Shutting Down". So I did a force shut down and then ran the Hijack This.

Looks like there are some old Norton files on the computer.

Run Hijack This, close all windows and browsers except Hijack This, place a check to the left of the following items and press "fix checked":

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNotify.exe (User 'SYSTEM')

O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNotify.exe (User 'Default user')

O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {03974811-C15F-462c-B6B0-2D2336AA57D0} - (no file)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: scsiusr4 - scsiusr4.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service (navapsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe (file missing)

Exit Hijack This.

Please download ComboFix to the desktop from one of the following links:

Link1

Link 2

Link 3

Combofix is a powerful tool so follow the instructions exactly or you could damage your computer.

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with Combofix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on This Link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

In your case to run Combofix do the following:
1. Go offline turn off your McAfee antivirus, and any antispyware that you may have.
2. Run Combofix and save its log.
3. Restart the computer to get the antivirus running again but leave the antispyware programs off until we get the computer cleaned.
4. Post the Combofix log.

Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Double-click combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
(Don't click on the window while the program is running or move the mouse, it will cause your system to hang.)
Please post the log it produces.

I closed my mcAfee antivirus and ran it again still it fails. It gives me an error "Starting Java Applet has failed" and then it says ---

Update has failed. Program has failed to start. Close the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 window and open it again to install the program. You must be online to update the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 database. With the latest database updates, you can find new viruses and other threats. Please go online to use Kaspersky Online Scanner 7. It is operating much better then before. The web opens quicker and the google redirecting problem is gone ... so I am satisfied now.

Thank you very much for all your help.

I have one different question - I have this unnamed folder on my desktop since ages now ... I don't think it is doing any harm, but is there a way to get rid of that ... I mean a simple way ... I do not want to do a lot of exercise or take up lot of your time on this issue ...

Well again I appreciate all your help here for the virus issue, and thank you again for your time!!!

You can see if the desktop cleanup utility will at least hide it. This link explains how to use the utility.

Have you tried namimg the folder?

Okay, I will try the link.

Yes, I have tried renaming, deleting, moving to other folder and deleting and all possible ways I could think about, but was not successful. I think I will leave it as it is for now.

Thanks for your help!!!
