Hi
About a month ago while I was away from home our computer contracted a virus (seres.exe? according to my son) which caused variious problems including downloading fake antivirus programs. My son did various searches and though that he had removed the virus.
We have been running Panda Antivirus 2009 but for some time it has been seeming to run multiple instances or crashing frequently.
When I returned home the computer was kind of working but still had various problems such as Desktop backgrounds changed and active desktop error messages. When I looked into fixing this I found that the virus had disabled various options in the Registry (ie could not run regedit, creation of restore points disabled, folder view options changed etc). I seem to have fixed most of these but there may well be more.
The most obvious problem now is that most times when you click on a link in google search results you are redirected to an unrelated site - it doesn't happen every time though. Also getting fairly frequent BSOD with massage PAGE_FAULT_IN _NON_PAGED_AREA.
Have scanned with Panda and found nothing. Also Adaware. Use ccleaner to remove unwanted temp files etc. Have also uninstalled a lot of redundant software to reduce the number of files on the PC and make the scans quicker.
At the moment I am running gmer.exe as I have seen this recommended on several sites - but I really don't know what to do with the results.
I would be very grateful for any help you could offer in fixing this problem.
