Google search keywords: "Pot", "Kettle", "Black" may be appropriate.
I've set up Proxomitron to hack off the "http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=U&start=1&q=" from the start, and the "&e..." from the end of Google links on search results. Apart from the privacy aspect, it's quicker to go direct. I don't want to route my UK webpage connections through a server in the US.

If you use IE6 with W95/98 then put a link to the IE Security tab in the Links bar:
C:\WINDOWS\control.exe inetcpl.cpl,@0,1
Not many websites need cookies so set yourself to Max Privacy then use link to set to Default "only when you need to". It's quite handy to have a ready means to jack your Internet Security up and down.
I suspect the same command works in XP but I've no XP machine to test it on.

You are not forced to use Google or Gmail. You are not forced to even use the internet. If you are that worried, unplug. It is that simple.
You do not need the internet or a computer to survive in todays world. Lots of people do just that everyday.

Snicker and sneer all you like, you are of course right (for now)!
Google, last I heard, had a boardroom mantra "Don't be evil" and also "don't discard anything". This of course places these guy firmly in our trusted zones.
The problem is, it doesn't take much for someone to say "But look how much money we could make!" When the value of the database Google has collected runs into the billions, this won't require too much of of a smooth talker to change the mantras.
Do any of you remember when Yahoo was a trusted benevolent organisation?
What about when ICQ introduced instant messaging? It was great until they introduced the pay for service which was replaced by the advertising supported model.
What about when Microsoft was a trusted company? OK you got me on that one.
The fact remains, Google do have an enormous potential for profitable mischief. Tankfully they are currently too honorable to realise this potential. For how long?

I didn't read the future history because I don't have flash player.
One way to avoid the google pit is to simply block it out.
You could also strip google cookies. Daily. Hourly.
You could really feed 'em garbage with a cookie randomizer.

I just wanted to see what others thought about this. Personally, I use google daily and am saddened to see such a well reknowned company sink to such a low. I will be migrating from the google world to some other secondary search engine. It makes me sick to think that google would take advantage of its customers in such a way. I guess everything boils down to the bottom dollar, its to bad they care more about profit than they do the privacy of their customers.

Google monitoring browsing.
It's just too giant...too huge a money maker....just think...virtually every computer user in the world who accesses the Internet (regardless of OS).
For marketers....it's Nirvana. For a vendor to marketers (Google)....GOLD.
And...the scary thing about it.....from what I understand, Google provides the backend for many other search engines and general services for tons of web sites generally. So if folks just say "well, I just won't go to google.com anymore" they'll still be using it everyday.
Oooo......my ears are buring, and I feel someone else is in the room...weird.

I think they would have reacted differently IF they knew that their privacy is compromised. Most don't.
