Try these, update them once you get them downloaded and installed:

Adaware SE (removes spyware)

Spybot (removes spyware)

Spywareblaster (Prevents spyware installation)

AVG Antivirus

This is basically all I use. I get very little spyware problems and the ones I usually get are tracking cookies when I forget to clear the browser cache (History, Temp Files and Temporary Internet Files, delete them daily). ---jabuck

Those programs are not adequate anymore...
CounterSpy for W9x/ME/2K/XP

MS Anti Spywarefor XP .

They will find more and both have real-time scanning and auto updating. You can use them in combonation with the others but it not needed.

I have maintained a list with links to many free reputable programs at my homepage (link above), many of which were already reccommended by previous posters, but there's a few other noteworthy ones ;) Also, I ran into problems installing CounterSpy and MS Anti Spy at the same time. MS Anti spy still seems a little buggy for me (it is still in beta last time I checked).

I would suggest using CounterSpy over Micosoft's Antispyware until a final release is available.
CounterSpy is basically the Giant Antispyware program with a few features labelled differently.Microsoft Antispyware is very similar as they aquired Giant late last year.
CounterSpy is also cheaper than Giant was.(Something I learned a few months after I bought a Giant license).
You only need one of these programs as they are virtually the same.

That's a bunch of crap.

Ad-Aware is free,first of all,and offers a paid-for real time protection option...
Ad-Aware Plus and Ad-Watch.I have never used either, but if you're gonna pay for CounterSpy...I'd certainly consider a comparison.Have you done so?

As far as SpywareBlaster is concerned,I'd love to hear your reasoning behind the claim that "it's not an adequate program anymore".IMHO,that's complete hogwash.

As far as "finding more" and "automatic updating",that certainly doesn't make it a "better" program. There are such things as false positives, and unforseen bugs in updates(which tend to be a problem when automatically updating anything).Finding more can also lead to problems, even if they're legit, for the less experienced user.

As far as Microsoft Anti-Spyware...I use it,like it,but it's still a BETA and they've already had a couple of glitches since taking it over from Giant.

My rant is now terminated. ;-)

I've noticed that since Microsoft bought Giant, that it has a tendancy to freeze my computer up when it tries to update. It gets real sticky and I sometimes have to reboot several times to get everything running properly. This never happened previous to the software purchase. Has anybody else reported any such problems?

Gust
