I just wanted to get you guys' opinions on some good FREE virus protection. I know this has been posted thousands of times already but I do not have the time to search right now. I just want to know some info on some software that is FREE and where I can find it. Thanks in advance guys!

The best I've found and use is Avast! 4 home edition
If you need a simple solution, try mine. I try to give advise on things that have happened to my PC. Changes in registry can be FATAL! Glad to have a chance to help you.

Also a good free firewall is Sygate Personal Firewall

By far, the best virus protection for a quick clean sweep would be NOD32.
However, NOD32 only offers free updates for 30 days, after which you'll have to purchase it.Although both AVG and Avast! are free, neither of them are all that good, and it would be worth the $10-$20 it would cost you to buy a copy of Norton or NOD32.

and you base that assumption on what?...
I have had NAV and found it to be bloated..
I now use AVG and you wouldn't know it was on the system....unlike NAV
My 2cents...get AVG Free if you like it then go pro

If it ain't broke....Then why the hell not?

I totally disagree with AVG being "not all that good."
I have used it for 1 year now, after dumping
Norton and found it to be very effective. As long as a surfer is safe, common-sensible and is pro-active in preventing infections, then you're good to go, to save $.
Norton is in fact very bloated and usues quite a bit of resources and I got very tired of the LIVE UPDATE issue never quite working properly.
I could always manually download the sigs, but who wants to, with LU, as one had paid for that anyway.

Actually, that last advice was probably the best I've heard all week. In truth, I've been running Norton with Auto-Protect disabled for quite a few years now; I scan everything I download, and, for as long as I've had my own computer/s (about 5-6 years), I've never downloaded a virus.
However, I've had many customers who have come to me with viruses already on their computers. Of all the anti-virus programs that I've tried, I found that Norton is the most effective, although it can sometimes take many hours to run. In comparison, NOD32 has always been able to clean out all the viruses except those in system restore (which is why you're supposed to delete the system restore points...) in under twenty minutes. AVG has yet to rid a single pre-infected computer of all (or even most) of its viruses: it will usually pick up most (but not all) of the viruses, but will rarely be able to do anything more.
I haven't used Avast! nearly as extensively as I have AVG, but my experiences have been similar.
Again, Anti-Virus programs are one of the very few utilities that I recommend my customers to shell out a few extra bucks for: with Anti-Virus programs, you get what you pay for.

I have been running AVG (purchased) and it's excellent!
Yankanuk - Update, I recently installed AVAST4 on a friends pc and on first scan it identied one virus that another AV overlooked and in a purchased game program yet. Nice!
EC - I agree. Did the same thing a very long time ago with Norton and for all the same reasons and then some.
