Hi all,
I was at a client today who could connect to AOL via modem and go where ever she wanted to. However, she could NOT get on the internet. She kept getting "Action cancelled" in IE, and somethig else in Netscape about an invalid profile, use the one from last time?
While I was trying to solve this prob. I noticed her home page was set to some gobbeldy gook combo of numbers & letters.exe. (of course, I didn't write it down) I thought OH, no, a virus!
Of course her last anti virus update was done 3 years ago.
Anyone come across anything like that before? How did you get back to the internet?
We upgraded her to AOL 7.0 - didn't work. I have to bring my rescue NAV disks to her on Monday, hopefully solving this mystery.
Meanwhile, I am open to suggestions!!!
Thanks

There are a few viruses which do that type of thing to the default "home page" listed in properties of Internet Explorer...sending you to a website that downloads an executable file.
The best thing I would suggest doing is to reinstall Internet Explorer completely... and if it is possible uninstalling it may not be a bad idea first. (Some versions of IE do not uninstall)
AOL 7.0 uses Internet Explorer as it's browser...and uses the same files that the regular browser uses (including connection information). Probably the next release of AOL will have Netscape built in and will eliminate the hassles caused by sharing IE.
Also, since you can't get online you will need either an IE installation disk or will need to make one so that it doesn't try going to the internet for the files.
