I have two networked pcs running windows xp pro in my home. One day I noticed shared folders showing up in my local network that aren’t on my network. The shared directories appear to be on remote computers that are not supposed to be on my network. I deleted the references to the shares in my network places. After few days looked in my network places again and saw the ghost shares where back in my local network. This time the references to the unwanted shares only showed up for about 10 seconds then they automatically vanished before I could delete them again. Weird! I scanned both PCs with updated versions of PC Cillin and Norton AV. Both scans didn’t find a virus. I also use the windows xp firewall. What is going on here?

Is the xp firewall the only one that you have?If so,you might want to consider using a free third party firewall.xp firewall is a very limited firewall that I would not rely on!wilders.org has free firewalls reveiwed and available for download.I disabled xp firewall and now I use Sygate (spf)5.0 free firewall. There are lots of forum posters that use other free firewalls. There seems to be a lot of positive feedback about those firewalls also.regards,JB

Hmmm.Another idea.Do you have any anti-trojan programs or Adaware? You could trial a good anti-trojan program and use the free spyware removal tools from wilders.org.Adaware and Spybot work well for finding nuisance programs that you sometimes get from p2p sites like kazaa. If you have a trojan on your computer, there are some good anti-trojan programs that can be trialed.Swatit is a free anti-trojan program also.

XP firewall is a joke, should be turned off and u should use a good firewall like Zone Alarm or Sygate.
