Subject: getting viruses right after formatOS: win xp homeCPU/Ram: p4 2.6ghz / 1gb |
Comment: Hi, I'm hoping someone knows what the deal is with my computer, this is not the first time this has happened. I just get done doing an ntfs format of my C drive and installed a fresh copy of winXP. The next thing I do is go to setup my DSL connection, right after I enter in all my info... IP address, Gateway, subnet mask etc.. and click OK my activity light on my modem goes crazy like it's downloading something but I'm not doing anything on the internet at this time. Come to find out that it's downloading and installing a bunch of trojans and spyware, not more then 10 minutes after seting up my DSL there's 11 exe files set to run on bootup, i found this out by running msconfig. My question is why the heck is this happening? I did a complete format and installed a fresh copy of XP for christs sake and the second I get on the net my modem can't wait to download these trojans and spywares. Anyone know what might be going on?

Reply: (edit)You need to install XP, including SP2, your antivirus and have your firewall turned on before you setup internet connectivity, and as soon as you do go run windows update and your AV update before you start surfing the net. Remember to get these scumware tools, Ad-Aware, Spywareblaster, Spybot S&D and some Crap Cleaner. The internet is like a minefield you need to surf with caution. Goodluck. Reply: (edit)Actually all you have to do is enable XP's built in firewall before connecting to the Internet the first time. It is not enabled by default. The SP2 update does enable the firewall by default. Other infected machines have "your IP address" and are trying to infect you if not already infected. This is how some of the spread. So without some sort of firewall (XP's, a software firewall or a router firewall) or the fix from Microsoft, you are going to get infected quickly.
