I found the discussion on sentry.exe, but was told it was too old to post a reply to. Hence I have put my new message below.

Thanks to Rick, who very helpfully got the address of the company that makes this junk. With respect to Gumby, I suggest that simply contacting the company (which I have done) alone will not do much good, as they will just put it in the bin. Complain to a consumer protection regulator. I sent an official complaint to the New York Consumer Protection Board (as the company is domiciled in NY). Their URL is http://www.consumer.state.ny.us/

The NYCPB may not be the right regulator to complaint to, but it is a start. If anyone knows of a more appropriate regulator, let me know, and I would encourage everyone to put as much bureaucratic heat on those who invade our privacy as they can. If nothing else, it will make Mr Kaufman spend so much time chasing official complaints that he won't have enough time to write these programmes.

You might try the Federal Trade Commission site at ftc.gov. It has links to a lot of consumer protection sites and this site:

My question about these type of sleazy webmasters/companies is why is it not illegal to do what they do???

I think perhaps a grassroots movement writing to legislators and appropriate agencies might be in order.

A guy posted on the spywareinfo.com forum a while back about his personal mission to fight one of these sleazy companies, I can't remember which one now. If you start hanging out at some of the other security forums on the web you might run into someone who has the motivation and means to fight!

In response to NickWJ, when I first contacted the jerks behind this scumware, I sent a copy to my states Attorney Generals office. I got a generic response from them that my complaint would be looked into. My email to Insight was ignored as you (& I)expected, as were my increasingly frequent follow ups after I gave them a chance to respond. My point was that if everyone who doesnt want this sort of thing installed on their computer did the same, we might get some results. We might get more action from consumer protection agencies or our lawmakers if they get enough complaints too.

Not all these people are as unprincipalled as Mr. Kaufman at Insight seems to be though. An email might work sometimes. When New.net's browser hijacker showed up on my PC, I sent them an email. To their credit they contacted me within 24 hours with instructions for removal of their software along with a number to call if I had any problems(the instructions were pretty complicated). When I complained via email that it wasnt a toll free number, they offered to phone me at my convienience. I dont think much of the way they make their living, but at least they made things right. They also gave me a list of the software it comes bundled with so I could avoid it in the future, though I hadnt installed anything on the list they gave me.
