hello, thanks for all those responses. i dont want to reinstall OS, cause I just installed a secondary OS (ubuntu 9.04 ) which runs fine. it is a friends computer and shes got a lot of photo and data on her machine. Her XP OS is a lame duck right now, I am writing this using ubuntu. I will try anser 6 to bring her XP back to live again.
Really apreciate your frinedly advice all the best from germany;

I would use ubuntu to back up "a lot of photo and data on her machine", first.
