Comment:

This morning I found my computer to be infected with a Trojan Horse known as Generic.XMS. I also, like the other person that posted with this problem, have AVG and it is up to date.

I followed the directions that you gave the other person who had this issue and installed HijackThis.

I have run the system scan and can provide a logfile if needed. Any help would be appreciated in fixing this issue. Thank you!

Download and install Ewido Security Suite We will need this later in safe mode

Be sure to update Ewido

Download killbox to your desktop from this link Killbox We will need it later in safe mode

Download SmitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Well, I caught the problem immediately. While generally savvy on these things, I totally pulled a no-brainer and installed that "Media Codec" willingly. The second it happened, I knew I did something dumb.

So my machine never really ran bad as I immediately posted the issue, but I am very thankful for the help.

Thank you again!
