Hello,

I recently had to reformat my laptop hard drive, because it 'crashed'. During the reformat, I partioned my hard drive into C: and D:

I installed WIN XP Pro as my OS, since this is what I had earlier as well.

Now I am facing a problem.

I have Norton Antivirus 2003 with up to date virus definitions running.

Whenever I connect to the internet, soon after I get a pop up window from Norton saying 'MSBlast.exe' has been found and removed from your computer.

Soon after I get a Generic WIN32 Error, after which I cannot open my programs, e.g. Windows Office, cannot copy and paste, etc.

I have run the flxblast tool from Symantec but somehow it only checks c:, and I my hard drive is partioned into c: and d:.

Furthermore, it never finds any virus, but when I restart my computer and log back on, the same process as above will repeat.

I am using a dial up connection to the internet.

Any suggestions please?
Thank You

RJ

Since you have Norton 2003 installed, use it to scan your system.

In the scanning options, you can select which drives to scan, or your entire computer.

BE SURE YOUR NAV 2003 IS UP TO DATE

PS: If you downloaded the removal tool from Symantec, go back to that page and review the instructions. There will be links on the page you downloaded the removal tool from explaining how to properly use it, how to disable your System Restore for removal of the worm, and how to patch your OS against it.

Hello,

Can you please tell me which update I need and from which site it is available. I presume it is under the under the updates in Windows.com, is there any other alternate site to download these from legally?.

I have installed zone alarm pro and when it loads, I get the following messages

I am NOT connected to the internet at this point.

The messages are:

-Zone Alarm Pro Alert Server Program: 'Do you want to allow Generic Host Proceses for Win32 Services to act as a server?

I also get a network connections pop up which says:

'You or a program have requested information from unxe.undiscovered.us. Which connection do you want to use?

Any suggestions please
Thanks

I'd say that unxe.undiscovered.us is spyware trying to report home. You need to run malware removal tools immediately (and also on a regular, say fortnightly, maintenance schedule). I use AdAware, SpyBot S&D and CWShredder tho' there are many more including online scanners.

Also you should do your best to prevent malware from entering your pc - you've obviously gotten a good firewall and AV so how about installing just one more, say SpywareBlaster, which will give added protection and will also advise you of attempted homepage hijack.

If you ever have to re-format again do NOT connect to the Internet without first installing a firewall (even enabling the built-in XP firewall is good enough temporarily) otherwise you open all doors to the MSBlaster worm.

Good luck

Be sure to Update / Patch your OS...XP is like swiss cheese. I see you are using a dial-up internet connection and I feel for you. It will be very inconvenient to do a windows update, but at the very least, you need to install the Critical Updates. Those are managable on dial-up, but once you start them, I suggest you sit down, take a nap, or watch a movie.

good luck!

Hey...

I have almost the same thing. I recently had to re-format my drive. Now when I am on dial-up at home and I log off, I get the "you or a program blah blah" message with various strange web sites. Seems it eventually connects when I go on line and everything is super-slow. A trojan of some kind is using the svchost to tie up all the system resources.

I've tried everything. Up to date Norton, Spybot, Adaware, and Highjack this. Only thing is my Windows Update is missing a few programs. For some reason it freezes when I download the Service Pack, so all I have it seems are updates that don't need SP.

Anybody have any ideas??
