Subject: Generic Host Process
OS: Windows XP incl. SP2
CPU/Ram: Intel
Model/Manufacturer: Dell XP5
Comment:

I received the following error message upon startup:

"Data Execution Prevention" program is stopping my Generic Host Process for Win32 services from running.

I also received this message:
svchost.exe – Application Error
The instruction at “0x5e0962fb “ referenced memory at “0x5e0962fb”. The memory could not be “written”.
Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on Cancel to debug the program.

Since then, flash storage devices such as my Camera, a CF card reader and similar are no longer recognised when attached to the computer. I hear the plugin-sound when connecting but neither 3rd party software nor Explorer does properly recognise the device.

I tried different USB ports, installed drivers and reinstalled. No success.

Can anybody help?

Best wishes
Guido

thanks jabuck.

I switched it of for Generic Host Process. That does not change the situation. DEP now identified another program as malicious (a pdf converter) and has switched that off too.

Camera and Card Reader Devices still do not show properly (and they do at another PC).

Do you think these two issues (DEP error messages) as well as the Device issue are linked (they occured together, though).

thanks, Guido

Probably linked to the Camera app. Add it also and any others to the list.
