Every time I access the net from my laptop, I get the following message in a popup window within about ten minutes:
"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close."

At that point, navigation away from the page I'm viewing - either to another page in the same site, or to a different site - throws up the 'Cannot Find Server' error page, even though I'm still connected to the net. I have to shut down and restart to be able to continue.

My ISP is BT (broadband). I have an external modem (Alcatel Speedtouch). My default browser is Firefox.

I've checked the archives about this but other users' problems seem to be different from mine.
Any suggestions will be very welcome.

Search google for that error message. You'll see a ton of stuff.

Thanks don2006, I've already done that - that's how I found this forum - and I've tried several suggestions but even the Microsoft Hotfix hasn't fixed it.
I was hoping for some more specific advice from this forum :)

Then start with some basics.
Check for any hardware conflicts in the device manager.
See if it happens in safe mode
Run msconfig and disable everything under startup.
If either of those last to things help, then there is a software conflict.

If your using Norton, there is a setting in Norton Int. Security 2005 + that you have to configure your Generic Host Process for Win32 from automatic to allow.

Hope this helps.
