From the freeware AV programs out there, (I know of AVG and AVAST) which one is best ?
1) takes small amount of RAM 2) updates without downloading a 10 mb definition file every 2 days ! 3) finds viruses ! 4) can clean them (unline McAfee a few years ago) 5) is free
please help. I want to install these on people's computers when I fix their PCs.

I have both, I use all of Avast but only use AVG to do a deep scan every so often, but to be honest avast is so good that avg never has to deal with anything. Try Spyware Guard it runs silently in the background and monitors your setup, its free too and Zonealarm a free firewall, I use these all together with no probs of them clashing.
